ARHS track and field loses Belyea to injury

AMHERST – When Amherst Regional High School competes at the district track and field championships this weekend; they’ll be doing it without their captain, Stephen Belyea.

“He broke his toe,” said Shawn McManaman, ARHS track and field head coach. “We lost our captain, so it’s quite a blow to the team.”

Belyea broke his toe playing basketball Wednesday night.

“That puts him out of track and field, so that’s a tough loss. He probably would have won four medals.”

McManaman said it was tough finding out the day before the districts that the team is losing Belyea.

“He’ll still maintain his role as captain,” said McManaman. “He’s knowledgeable, so he’ll be around for us.”

Despite the loss of Belyea, McManaman is confident the 40-person team will step up to the challenge and do well.

“We have a good all-around team. We have some good runners, jumpers and throwers,” he said. “I hope we’ll get almost all our athletes in the regionals.”

The regionals are next week in Stellarton and the following week is the provincials in Cape Breton.

“We’re hoping all our relay team’s get through to provincials because, in the end, our relays are the most important,” said McManaman.

They also have Desmond Oliver, who is running in the senior special events.

Oliver will compete in the 100-metre, long jump and shot put.

McManaman says he’s fast.

“I’m expecting real good competition from him in his three events,” said McManaman.
