AMHERST – There is strength in numbers.

“Last year we had about 15 kids try out for the team, and this year we have 27 kids trying out,” said Charlie Chambers, boy’s slo-pitch coach at Amherst Regional High School.

The first tryout of the 2014 season for both the boys and girls slo-pitch teams was Tuesday night at Robb’s Centennial Complex. About 20 girls came out for tryouts.

Chambers, along with Darren Collins coaches the boys, while Fred Gould, ARHS athletic director, coaches the girl’s team.

All three coaches will have to cut their teams down to about 12 players.

“It’s tough to make cuts when you have this many people trying out but the team shows a lot of potential,” said Chambers as he watched his players smash the ball to the outfield, including home runs from Lucas Sangster and Reuben MacKenzie.

Six players from last year’s boy’s team, Alex Vansnick, Peter Kane, Evan MacKenzie, Jordie McManaman, Brandon Greeno and Matt Hunter, hope to make the roster for this year’s team.

They will face tough competition from newcomers, which includes eight kids from Grade 9.

“We have a nice mix of ages trying out,” said Chambers.

They also have many hockey players trying out for the first time, including Josh Pugsley who plays hockey with the Moncton Wildcats, and Sangster, who plays hockey with the Major Midget Weeks Crushers.

Looking out at the player’s, Chambers said they have good hitting and, potentially, some really good pitching.

.”Hopefully we’ll make it to provincials,’ said Chambers.

Chambers has been coaching slo-pitch at ARHS since it’s inception in 2000.

They have won six provincial titles over the last 15 years.

Their first game of the season is next week in Parrsboro.
