New coaching staff to be announced at a later date

AMHERST - The Amherst Colts hope to start next season with $20,000 in their coffers.

"My goal is to make sure the Junior C Colts have at least $20,000 in the bank before they start next year's operations," said George Baker, Colts fundraising co-ordinator.

After their annual hockey tournament, which begins April 4, the Colts will have all outstanding bills paid off.

"The last couple of year's we've been able to started the season without any debt," said Kevin St. Peter, Colts president.

The $20,000 for the start of next season will come from their three major fundraisers, which the Colts launched last week.

The first fundraiser has three prizes up for grabs.

"The first fundraiser draw we're doing is for one-night at Crystal Palace for four people, a full day pass for the fun park, a $50 gift certificate for McGinnis Restaurant, and a shuttle to and from Crystal Palace," said Baker.

The second draw is for a seven-hour spa at Damaris Spa and Wellness Centre.

The third draw is for a 271-piece tool set from Canadian Tire.

Tickets are $2 each, three for $5, and 10 for $10.

The draw is April 30.

The draw for the second fundraiser is in September.

"It's for two motorcycles, a 125cc and a 110cc," said Baker.

The first draw is for the bigger bike and the second draw is for the smaller bike.

Tickets are three for $5 or 10 for $10.

The third fundraiser is their $100 ticket draw, which has been running for three years now.

The first Friday of every month beginning Oct. 1, and ending February we will give away $500, and every other Friday of each month we will draw for $200," said Baker. "At Christmas, on December 25, we will give away a $1,000 prize, and then on Valentines Day we are going to draw for another $1,000."

Every winning ticket goes back into the draw drum for the next draws.

There's 250 tickets being sold at $100 each.

We currently have 50 tickets sold," said Baker.

What really helped the team financially was playing in two playoff rounds.

"We had a lot of fans come out, so it was a big boost," said St. Peter.

Baker says the quality of hockey was good.

One good thing I find is that the Colts are a team that wants to play hockey than a team that wants to fight," said Baker. "They were more involved in playing hockey than playing like goons."

The Colts two leading scorers, Ryan Horseman and Ryan Barron, won't be back next year, "but we have some strong players coming back and coming up through the midget program, so we have a nice nucleus coming back," said St. Peter.

They will also have a new coaching staff.

"We hope to have the coaching staff secured by April 1," said Baker.

Baker hopes people will support the team during their fundraising drive and invites anybody to come on board as a sponsor.

Draw tickets can be purchased at the canteen at Amherst Stadium or at Amherst Centre Mall.
