AMHERST – History was made this past weekend as the Senior Vikette basketball team became golden for the third consecutive year, a feat never before accomplished with this team.

The Vikettes brought back the banner from Hants East during the NSSAF Division 2 Provincial basketball tournament.

"There are no words to explain how proud we are of the entire team. Ten players represented themselves at a high level for four months, but saved their best basketball for the big finale,” said Gillian Ellis, Vikettes Coach. “We had a very experienced and well rounded group, who embodied the characteristics of how to play as a championship team."

In the Championship game, the Vikettes jumped out to an early lead and never looked back wining against Central Kings 68-32. Scoring for the Vikettes were:

Madison Bennett - 2 points

Danielle Young - 13 points

Mia Furlong - 7 points

Taylor Chitty - 2 points

Ashley MacEachern - 17 points

Lauren Chitty - 7 points

Lauren MacEachern - 19 points

"We played a tough schedule this past season, playing several top Maritime tournaments, as well as travelling to Orlando, Florida in December,” said Ellis. “Everyone was committed to doing the work and it paid off. We accomplished the goals set at the beginning of the season, one of which ... winning a third provincial title."

In their first game of the tournament, the Vikettes beat West Kings 73-46. Scoring for the Vikettes were:

Madison Bennett - 2 points

Danielle Young - 12 points

Taylor Chitty - 3 points

Hannah Beland - 4 points

Lauren Chitty - 17 points

Alexa Thompson - 4 points

Ryanne Belyea - 4 points

Lauren MacEachern - 25 points

In their second game, the Vikettes beat the host Hants East Tigers 70-35. Scoring for the Vikettes were:

Madison Bennett - 3 points

Danielle Young - 17 points

Mia Furlong - 7 points

Taylor Chitty - 4 points

Hannah Beland - 8 points

Lauren Chitty - 14 points

Ryanne Belyea - 4 points

Lauren MacEachern - 11 points

Our seniors - Danielle Young, Ashley MacEachern, and Lauren MacEachern have been a large piece of each provincial win. All three will be missed next season, but will continue their basketball careers at post secondary institutions,” said Ellis. “Danielle plans to play soccer and basketball at Mount Saint Vincent and the twins will be heading across the marsh to Mount Allison.

“These three have played together for a long time. Although it will be tough seeing them wear opposing jerseys,” she added. “It is an exciting and well deserved opportunity for them.

"It is a bittersweet feeling to see this season end because we were a family. To be a part of something like this is special and doesn't happen all that often. I have coached sport in Amherst for many years, but this is one of the teams I will be talking about when I am reminiscing many years from now."
