NEW GLASGOW – The New Glasgow Junior High Lady Panthers captured their second consecutive Northumberland Region junior high girls A basketball championship Tuesday in Oxford.
In the semifinal the Panthers defeated Bible Hill Junior High 62-39.
With the win, New Glasgow advanced to the championship game against Saint Andrews from Antigonish.
The Panthers, coached by Andy MacKay, won the regional banner with a 57-43 victory over the Antigonish team.
With the opening of the New Glasgow Academy in September, this was the last year for the New Glasgow Junior High Panthers and with the championship, they were strong representatives of the storied basketball history at New Glasgow Junior High School.
Leading the Panthers scoring this week were Riley Sood, Katelyn Biron and Courtney Smith with 34, 26 and 25 points respectively.
Also chipping in offensively for New Glasgow were: Abbie Delaney (8), Sarah O’Neil (7), Sabrina Snyder (6), Jordyn MacMillian (4), Hailey Fahie (4), Karielle Floyd (3) and Haley Earle (2).
The championship capped a successful season for the Panthers who posted 19 wins and five losses this year.
The New Glasgow squad was led in scoring by Sood who averaged 16 points a game, followed by Biron and Smith who each averaged nine points a game.
Lucia MacKay and Delaney provided strong guard play this season while Grade 8 forwards Fahie, Sabrina Schneider and MacMillan provided solid rebounding and timely scoring.
The team looks well positioned for next season with first year players O’Neil, Aliya Fraser, Floyd and Earle all making solid contributions this year.
