Pugwash boys win Division 4 championship
Cumberland County schools swept the NSSAF Division 4 banners over the weekend.
The Oxford Regional Education Centre Golden Bears won their third consecutive NSSAF Division 4 girls basketball championship on the weekend. OXFORD – The Oxford Regional Education Centre Golden Bears are golden for the third consecutive year.
The Golden Bears entered the NSSAF Division 4 tournament at Cabot High as the top seed and rolled to the school’s fourth provincial championship banner in five years.
Oxford claimed the banner on Saturday with a 71-30 win over Lockeport with Ashley O’Brien scoring 28 points and Regan Swan adding 11.
Morgan Bishop with 10, Kathryn Williams with seven, Andrea Dorn with six, Taylor Mattinson with four and Katy Reid and Bethany Warwick with two points each also scored.
It was the final game for graduating players co-captains Regan Swan and Andrea Dorn, Ashley O’Brien, Morgan Bishop, Katy Reid and Katherine Williams.
Oxford opened with a 93-32 win over the eighth-seeded Ecole Sommet Cougards.
O’Brien had 22 points for Oxford, while Bishop with 13, Warwick with 11 and Dorn with 10 also scored.
Rhyse Black scored eight, Megan Thompson and Reid each had six, Mattinson had five and Swan and Williams each had four. Kathryn Hickman added three points.
The Golden Bears earned a spot in the final with a 69-31 in over the host Cabot High Trailblazers.
O’Brien had 14 points to lead the way for Oxford while Bishop with 12, Warwick with 11 and Black with 10 finished in double figures.
Williams with seven, Mattinson with five and Swan, Dorn, Thompson, Reid and Hickman each added two points.
Meanwhile in Lockeport, the Pugwash District High Panthers defeated Cabot High 92-79 to claim the boy’s Division 4 banner.
Jordan Reid had 38 points for Pugwash, while Colby Stevens scored 21 and Tristan McKeller added 10.
Jordan Boyd with nine, Lucas Morrison with eight, Kyle Fromm with four and Caleb Pye with two also scored for Pugwash.
Cody Buchanan had 28 for Cabot.
Oxford lost 79-73 in the bronze medal game to Colchester Christian Academy.
Colby Hicks had 21 points for Oxford while Spencer Richard had 11 and Devin Porter had 10. Drew Skidmore and Kyle O’Brien with eight each and Clifford Lamber with three also scored for Oxford.
Josh Bokma had 34 for CCA.
Pugwash opened on Friday with a convincing 90-56 win over Lockeport.
Stevens had 21 points to lead Pugwash, while Reid had 20, Morrison had 15 and Pye had 13, McKellar and Boyd with eight each and Fromm and Isaac Purdy with two points and one point rounded out the scoring.
In the semifinal, Pugwash defeated CCA 85-52 with Stevens scoring 24 points and Reid chipping in 23, while McKellar had 16.
Morrison with six, Boyd with five, Garrett Alguire with three and Justin Brownell with two also scored.
Nathaniel VanderKwaak had 18 for CCA.
Oxford opened with a 87-54 in over Fountain Academy.
Porter had 22 points for Oxford while Skidmore had 20, James Black had 19 and Hicks had 14. Also scoring for Oxford were O’Brien with six, Richard with five and Lambert with two.
Oxford lost 84-76 to Cabot High with Hicks scoring 18 points in the losing effort and Porter adding 16. Skidmore with 14, Black with 11 and Lambert and O’Brien with three each also scored for Oxford.
Buchanan had 26 for Cabot High.
