ARHS Vikings defeat Central Kings Gators 62-49 to secure back-to-back provincial basketball titles for seven outgoing players, five returning players

AMHERST-For only the second time in school history, the Amherst Regional High School (ARHS) Vikings have repeated as NSSAF division 2 basketball champions.

In front of a stand rooming only crowd, the Vikings defeated the Central Kings Gators 62 to 49 in the gold medal game as Queens We Are the Champions permeated the gym.

I think that this is a perfect way to end our season, stated Vikings head coach Thomas Skabar. To end the careers of seven fine young men with a provincial title. I couldnt be more proud. Theyve dedicated themselves to their school work, and to the team. Theyve done both their school and their community proud. Im very thankful to be a part of this.

One of the seven ARHS senior boys Vikings who capped off his high school basketball career Saturday with a second consecutive NSSAF division 2 banner was Willie Legere.

Its a lot different winning this year, said Legere. Last year, it was a surprise. This year, I think there was a lot of pressure on us to win. I always had a bad thought that if we lost as grade 12s in our last game on this court itd be terrible. Im proud to be one of the seven grade 12s. I love them like brothers. Ive played basketball with most of them since about grade five at Spring Street Academy. This is only the second time that the Vikings have repeated as champions. The last time was when Thomas Skabar played.

Along with Legere, Caleb Hayes, Kirt Jessome, Marcus Kindervater, Matt McCrossin, Jason Morse and Adrian Van Vulpen have played their final Vikings basketball game.

Weve never three-peated before but were hoping it might be possible, said Legere.

While the 2014-2015 NSSAF division 2 basketball championships are a year away, such returning players as Logan Dowe, Jacob Harnish, Blake Thompson, Joel McCrossin and Dustin Pipes will be back next season to attempt to make Vikings basketball history.

Until then, players, friends and family alike will share in celebrating their lastest on court accomplishment.

Congratulations to the kids and a big thank you to all of the parents who came out, stated ARHS vice-principal Matt OToole. This was one of the most organized and best supported provincial basketball championships that Ive ever seen.
