The Hawkes team of (from left) Paul Hawkes, Peter Rushton, Dwayne Ogilvie and Ed Gogan are in Lower Sackville this weekend, where they are representing the Amherst Curling Club in the 2014 Dominion Men’s Club Championship.
AMHERST – Paul Hawkes says his Amherst curling team has as good a chance of winning the 2014 Nova Scotia Dominion Men’s Club Championship as any other team entered in the 18-team tournament.
“I have curled against a number of these guys before at different times in my curling career and I think we have a better than average chance of finishing at the top of the field,” said Hawkes.
The championship started Thursday and wraps up on Sunday at the Lakeshore Curling Club in Lower Sackville.
Only one team from each club in the province is allowed to enter the competition, and the Hawkes team is representing the Amherst Curling Club.
“Typically, these are your club players that aren’t at the provincial champion level,” said Hawkes. “There are different rules and qualifications to get into this tourmanent, such as your team can’t have competed together in provincial competitions or super-leagues.”
This is the first time Hawkes has competed in the Dominion tourney.
“We’ll go down and do our very best and see how we come out when everything is said and done.”
Winners of the tournament go the national Dominion tournament Nov. 24-29 at the Mayflower Curling Club in Halifax.
