NEW GLASGOW - The ARHS JV Vikettes fell 44-38 to the North Nova Education Center Gryphons in the Northumberland Regional basketball championship game recently held in New Glasgow.
"We were hoping to advance to the provincials but we didn't have a good regional final,” said Charlie Chambers, JV Vikettes coach. “We came back from a 17-4 first quarter deficit and got as close to three in the second half.”
The Gryphons, who received 20 points from Hanna Williams, held a 25-18, halftime lead over ARHS.
Risha McKenney was the only player in double digits with 13 points for the Vikettes, while Miah Tooley managed nine.
Brooke Wilson hooped six, Jessica Wilson four, while Steph MacDonald, Rachel Chevarie and Emma Taylor had two each.
The Vikettes reached the regional final by virtue of their 60-21 victory over Northumberland High Nighthawks.
McKenney pumped home 18 points, with Taylor powering inside for 10 and Sonia Minocha notched eight.
Tooley hooped six, Chevarie bucketed five, Brooke Wilson with four, Jessica Wilson, three and MacDonald, Renee Allen and Andrea Comeau added two apiece.
ARHS qualified to play Charles P. Allen of Bedford but the weather did not allow for it, allowing the Capital Region team to advance to this weekend's provincial championships at Riverview High in Sydney.
“Hopefully our players will work on their game over the summer and return as better players for both the JV and senior Vikettes,” he added.
