Team gearing up for Bedford Classic, Basketball Nova Scotia Provincials

AMHERST-It might not have been the gold medal result that they were looking for, but the Chandler Classics (who won silver) put in a gold-medal worthy effort this weekend at the Chandler Classic Winter Invitational basketball tournament.

“The team played really well, improving dramatically since the start of the season,” said Chandlers head coach Rick McKenney following their 42-32 finals loss to the Cole Harbour Rockets. “They (the Classics) are starting to gel as a team.  It is still a work in progress, with some errors on offence and on defence. Overall, they played well. Congratulations to the Rockets. It was a tough loss, but a great game. It’s all about having fun (which it was). We’re getting better.”

The Rockets player of the game was Chris Reid while the hustle award went to Mitchell Cruickshank. For the Classics, Caleb Vanvulpen was named player of the game while Josh Harnish was selected as the team’s hustle award recipient.

“Thank you for the hospitality.” said Rockets coach Chris Reid. “We had a blast.”

En route to winning their silver medals, the Chandler Classics defeated the South Shore Spartans 39-32 in the tournament’s opening game on Friday night. On Saturday morning, the Chandler Classics defeated the Prospect Rd. Bulls 55-28.

Other tournament action saw the Cole Harbour Rockets triple up the Prospect Rd. Bulls 48-16 on Friday. On Saturday, Cole Harbour edged the South Shore Spartans 44-37. In the bronze medal game, the Spartans got by the Prospect Rd. 48-41.

“We would like to thank the teams that came from Halifax area, referees, EB Chandler administration (especially Peter Nixon), all the parents, without whom the tournament couldn’t have happened,” said assistant coach Rachna Minocha-McKenney. “Most of all, thanks to the players who worked hard in every game.”

Looking ahead, the Chandler Classics will be competing this weekend in the 28 team Bedford Classic before heading to BNS provincials March 28 through 30.
