AMHERST - Four Spartans swimmers made their mark at the Junior Provincial Championships in Truro this month, earning an impressive assortment of awards during the two-day meet.

"With over 250 swimmers on deck, it would have been easy to get lost among the larger teams," said coach Jan Matthews with a laugh. "But we weren't willing to be intimidated or overlooked, either in or out of the water.

"Over 90 per cent of our results were personal best swims and included 11 top-10 individual finishes.," added Matthews. "It was inspiring to see how the girls supported each other in both the individual and team relay events."

Katelyn MacNeil qualified for finals in each of her events, collecting bronze medals in the 50-metre butterfly, 50-metre backstroke and 200-metre breaststroke events. She also collected place ribbons in the 50-metre freestyle and the 50-metre and 100-metre breaststroke. She recorded five personal best times during the weekend.

Daphne Fawthrop also earned five best times, collecting a silver medal in the 50-metre backstroke and top-ten rankings in the 50-metre butterfly and 800-metre free.

Kaitlin Baker and Lexie Ott swam personal bests in all of their events. Baker placed ninth in the 50-metre backstroke, while Ott finished tenth overall in the 100-metre breaststroke event.

The four swimmers joined forces for the highly competitive senior girls relay events, claiming fourth in the 200-metre freestyle and placing fifth in the 200-metre medley relay.

The team continues their training at the YMCA as they prepare for the long course season and spring championships.
