Amherst Cheetahswin thrilling gameSaturday over Malcolm Magic

AMHERST-The Antigonish Royals won the Amherst Cheetahs bantam tourney following their 58-37 championship game Sunday over the Sackville Titans.

“Antigonish is a very strong and disciplined team,” said Amherst Cheetahs head coach Terri Hope-Tooley. “We had an unfortunate loss on Friday in the home opener, and rallied back in our first and second games on Saturday, winning both, but, after having a couple of our starting players out with injuries, we just couldn’t topple the Antigonish Royals (64-37) to earn a spot in the championship game.”

In the home opener on Friday, the Cheetahs were defeated 58-45 by the Titans. On Saturday, the Cheetahs defeated the Moncton Hawks 49-34 before storming back with a vengeance to defeat the Malcolm Magic 45-44 in the game’s dying seconds.

“That win was one of our most exciting yet,” stated Hope-Tooley. “Our girls really deserved that one. We are proud of the effort our girls put forth. There was a lot of great ball here this weekend (including a skills competition)—some very different playing styles, but a lot of skill, sportsmanship and teamwork all around.”

Other tournament action saw the Magic beat the Hawks 53-35 on Friday before the Royals defeated the Titans 50-39 on Saturday. Also on Saturday, the Royals defeated the Hawks 52-25 and the Titans defeated the Magic 66-48. On Sunday, the Titans defeated the Hawks 44 to 33 while the Royals defeated the Magic 49-30.

“The parents organized and hosted a great tournament. We are very fortunate to have such involved parents who care about the success of the team, the fundraising and the team bonding that comes out of hosting a tournament, “said Hope-Tooley. Special thanks to our sponsors Staples and Bickerton’s Plumbing and Heating  and the many volunteers that helped to make our bantam tournament a success.”
