Atlantic Canada’s largest ski race set for February 14 through 16 at Ski Wentworth

WENTWORTH-The Winter Olympics that are currently underway in Sochi, Russia is not the only place that you can find high-level skiing this coming weekend.

From February 14 through February 16, all eyes will be on Ski Wentworth as the Wentworth Ski Race club, in conjunction with Alpine Ski Nova Scotia, will host  the 2014 Rolland Brunner race as part of the Atlantic Cup series of ski races.

“The Rolland Brunner race is traditionally the largest race in Atlantic Canada and a prime selection for the upcoming Nova Scotia Canada games’ team,” stated Alpine Ski Nova Scotia Board Member/Wentworth Ski Racing team parent James Placer.

The Wentworth Ski Race Team, which kicked off its ski season last month in Poley Mountain in Sussex, New Brunswick, has a long and storied racing tradition.

“The Wentworth Ski Race Team is over 40 years old,” stated Wentworth Ski Race Team parent and volunteer Ian Havill. “It’s open to racers between the ages of 8 and 21. We have between 80 and 100 racers. It runs between the second week in January and the end of March. We race in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, Mount Tremblant and Whistler towards the end of the season. The Wilson family has been a proud supporter for many, many years.”

It wasn’t too long ago that former Wentworth Ski Race Team member turned first-year Wentworth Ski Race Team coach Sarah Byrne raced in the Rolland Brunner. Byrne also participated in the 2011Canada Winter Games in Halifax/Wentworth.

“I competed in it from 2008 until 2013,” said Byrne. “The athletes that I coach do not participate in the Rolland Brunner, though I have worked with a few of the athletes who are in it. From the times I worked with them, and assisted coaching them at races prior to this, I am confident that they will do very well. We will have a large amount of podium finishes, especially with the home hill advantage.”

Coming up, the Wentworth Ski Race Team will be holding a dinner/Chase-the-Ace type fundraiser on Saturday, February 22 at the Wentworth Recreation Centre.
