AMHERST – Down 5-2 with 13 minutes left in the third period the Amherst CIBC Wood Gundy Ramblers nearly came back to tie the Truro Bearcats.

“The boys showed a lot of heart. They got behind and they never gave up,” said Jim Bottomely after the Maritime Hockey League contest at Amherst Stadium.

Amherst’s Serge Boisvert scored the first goal of the game only 42 seconds into the first period off passes from Nick Cass and Robert Davis, but the first period ended with the Bearcats up 3-1.

Truro scored early in the second period, making it a 4-1 game before Davis scored at 8:37 into the second, cutting the Bearcats lead in half.

Truro got another early period goal, this time it was early in the third, giving themselves a 5-2 lead before the Ramblers started their comeback.

Cam MacDonald scored at 7:12 into the period off passes from Boisvert and Cass, and then Justin Thomas scored at 8:54 into the period off an assist from Bruce Hornbrook.

The Ramblers dominated the rest of the game and had several good scoring chances.

Richard Tingley was in goal for the Ramblers, and shots on goal was 41-33 in favour of the Ramblers.

“Our game has improved quite a bit on winning the one-to-one battles and we’re taking the puck to the net more,” said Bottomley. “They’re doing the little things that make a difference. Tonight we fell a little short but it certainly wasn’t from lack of trying.”

Sunday’s game was one of two games the Ramblers hosted over the weekend.

On Saturday they beat the Yarmouth Mariners 8-3.

Brock Morrison and Thomas scored two goals and on assist each, with Hornbrook and Boisvert adding one goal and one assist each, and Ryan Caswell and Zach MacEwen adding one goal each.

Jamie Bishop, Cam McDonald, Ross Martin, Davis , Tingley and Brett Shute scored one assist each.

The Ramblers outshot the Mariners 35-31.

The Ramblers have a re-match with the Mariners next Friday in Yarmouth. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.

Looks like Truro in the first and probably last round for Rams. Just can't seem to beat the Bearcats.
