AMHERST-The Charles P. (CP) Allen JV Cheetahs defeated their Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) rivals Citadel High JV Phoenix to win the six-team ARHS JV Vikettes Hoop Classic on Saturday at Amherst Regional High School.

ARHS lost the tournament’s opening game to North Sydney's Memorial JV Marauders 46-38 despite the fact that they led by a score of 25-17 at half time.

“Against Memorial in the opener, turnovers and missed opportunities killed us, even though we only lost by eight points,” said JV Vikettes coach Charlie Chambers.

Scoring for the Vikettes were Brooke Wilson (6), Jessica Wilson (13), Rachel Chevarie (6), Makayla Embree (4), Risha McKenney (2) and Andrea Comeau (7).

Other Friday action saw Citadel defeat the Cobequid Education Centre (CEC) Cougars 88-15; Moncton's Bernice MacNaughton JV basketball team defeated Truro's CEC JV team 91-17 and C.P. Allen defeated ARHS JV Vikettes 68-22.

Scoring for the ARHS JV Vikettes in their game against JV Hoop tournament finalists CP Allen were Stephanie MacDonald (2), Rachel Chevarie (7), Emma Taylor (1), Risha McKenney (5), Miah Tooley (5), and Andrea Comeau (3).

“Against CPA, we failed to match their intensity and energy, which I felt bad for our parents and fans to sit and watch that particular contest,” explained Chambers.

The JV Vikettes rebounded in their final game of the tournament on Sunday, defeating CEC by a score of 57-19 to finish fifth overall in their home tournament.

“The girls played well against CEC and everyone contributed, both from the bench and from the floor,” stated Chambers.

Scoring for the JV Vikettes were Sonia Minocha (4), Jessica Wilson (7), Stephanie MacDonald (7), Rachel Chevarie (6), Emma Taylor (7), Renee Allen (2), Makayla Embree (2) Risha McKenny (14), Miah Tooley (2) and Andrea Comeau (6).

Other action from Saturday saw C.P. Allen edge Memorial 44-39 while Citadel defeated Bernice MacNaughton 88-55. Bernice MacNaughton got by Memorial 59-47 to win third place.

“We head to West Kings for a tourney this coming weekend, then have the exam break,” stated Chambers. "We'd really like to thank the parent support and sponsors who helped make the tourney another success."
