Skinner's late goal is the winner
The Nova Ice claimed their second championship banner of the season with a 2-1 win over Colchester in the final of the DQ tournament in Shediac, N.B.

The Nova Ice defeated the Colchester Cyclones 2-1 to claim the DQ tournament championship in Shediac, N.B. SHEDIAC, N.B. – Sydney Skinner scored a short-handed goal 1:25 to play to lift the Nova Ice to a 2-1 win over the Colchester Cyclones to claim the midget A division at the Dairy Queen Girl’s Hockey Tournament here Sunday.
Skinner split the Colchester defence and managed to fire a shot into the top corner of the net to give the Ice the lead.
“The girls played the perfect game,” coach Bliss Walton said. “We had great team defence all weekend with the forwards backchecking and the defence making sure Jennie (Underwood) could always see the puck coming to the net. We only gave up two goals in five games.”
Skinner had both goals for the Ice, while Kailey Kane and Brianna Dorey and Brooke Walton each added assists.
Adele Mansour earned MVP honours for the game.
This is the first year for the Nova Ice, which is a combined team of players from both Parrsboro and the Cumberland County Minor Hockey Associations. There is also a player on the team from Tatamagouche.
This was the club’s second tournament championship of the season.
The Ice opened the tournament with an 8-0 win over the Halifax Hawks. Skinner scored three times while Mansour, Kane, Maddie Currie, Megan Proctor and Anna Moore also scored.
Underwood picked up her first shutout of the tournament while Jasmine Welton had three assists and Kylee Smith, Kiersten Greeno and Mansour each had two assists. Brooke Walton, Brianna Dorey, Kirsten Willigar, Whitney Milner and Proctor each had one assist.
Skinner was named game MVP.
In their second game, Mansour had three goals as the Ice defeated the North River Flames 5-1.
Moore had a goal and three assists and Kane had a single goal, while Proctor, Brooke Walton, Currie, Milner, Smith and Skinner each chipped in single assists.
Brooke Walton was named game MVP.
Underwood earned her second shutout and Brooke Walton had a goal and two assists in a 3-0 win over Pownal.
Proctor and Currie each scored once and Dorey, Jasmine Walton and Smith each added assists.
Underwood earned game MVP honours.
