Colts beat league leading Silver and Black Attack

Edge Rhino at home

AMHERST – The Amherst Colts catapulted into second place in the Nova Scotia Junior C Hockey League with two weekend wins.

They beat the league leading Silver and Black Attack on Saturday in Spryfield, and then came home on Sunday and edged the Fundy Rhino 3-2.

The Colts took a 1-0 lead against the Rhino after Andrew Barron scored with eight seconds left in the first period. The goal was scored on a power play with an assist from Matt Beal.

The Rhino tied the game midway through the second period but the Colts made it a 3-1 game before the end of the period off an unassisted power play goal from Aaron Crocker and a goal by Ryan Horseman, with an assist from Barron.

The Rhinos scored with 6:26 left in the game but were unable to tie it up before the final buzzer.

Matt Caron faced 33 shots in goal for the Colts and his teammates had 24 shots on Rhino goaltender Eric Durand.

On Saturday in Spryfield the Colts took a 2-0 lead mid-way through the first with goals from Ryan Legere and David Lockerby. Ben Heaurde assisted on the Legere goal, and Barron assisted on the Lockerby goal.

Spryfield scored with 3:40 left in the first and the teams went to their locker rooms with the Colts up 2-1.

Amherst outscored the Attack 4-2 in the second period.

Baron and Lockerby scored the first two second period goals and Nathan McCue scored the second two Colts goals.

Barron assisted on the two McCue goals and on Lockerby’s goal, and Lockerby assisted on the Barron goal.

Matt Caron faced 56 shots and the Colts fired 55 shots on Attack goaltender Ben Noonan.

With the two wins the Colts have 31 points and a 15-4-0-1 record, one point behind the Attack, which have a record of 16-4.

The Colts play home-and-home against the Clare Lions this weekend.

Friday’s game is on the road and Sunday the Colts host the Lions at 4 p.m. at Amherst Stadium.
