: Belyea scores penalty shot, shorthanded goals
AMHERST – The Amherst Regional High School Vikings Division 2 hockey squad faced off Friday against the Division 1 North Nova Gryphons, beating them by a score of 4-0.
Vikings head coach Wayne MacKenzie said his team played with a lot of heart.
“The key to the win was the man-to-man coverage in our own end,” said MacKenzie. “Also, the boys moved the puck well and got lots of pucks to the net, and our power play and penalty kill worked well.”
All the Vikings goals were scored in the second period.
Stephen Belyea scored the first two goals of the game only eight seconds apart.
His first goal was on a penalty shot at 4:30 into the second, and his second goal was shorthanded off a pass from Gordon Mitchell.
Mitchell got all three assists in the game. He also assisted on a goal by Ryan Ackles who scored with a shot just under the crossbar at 9:57 into the second frame, and Mitchell assisted on a power play goal by Alex Vansnick who scored on a slapshot with a little over two minutes left in the period.
Matt Hunter got the shutout in goal for the Vikings, making 28 saves on 28 shots, while Gryphons goaltender Lukas MacDonald made 18 stops on 22 shots.
“Matt said he liked the game because he could see most of the shots,” said MacKenzie.
Last week the Vikings travelled to New Glasgow where they lost 9-4 to the Gryphons.
“They were up 5-0 off the bat and in the third we beat them 3-1,” said MacKenzie. “We had not beaten this team, even last year. They’re a very strong team.”
The Vikings are back in action this Friday night when they host Port Hawkesbury’s Strait Area Education Recreation Centre (SAERC).
Admission is $2, and people are asked to bring non-perishable food items for the Amherst Food Bank.
Game time is 8:15 at Amherst Stadium.
