The Swift Current Comp. Senior Ardens basketball team opened their season with a second-place finish at the Pink “Shoot For A Cure” Invitational Basketball Tournament in Estevan.

The Ardens won their first two games of the season before coming up short against Lumsden in the gold medal game.

The Ardens opened the season with a 65-39 win over Melville on Friday. Grade 10 guard Jade Addai and grade 11 guard Katie Darlington-Keubler led the Ardens with 12 points apiece.

The Ardens defeated the Moose Jaw Central Cyclones 62-52 in the semi-final Saturday, led by a 19-point effort from Darlington-Keubler. Addai added 14 points in the win.

The Ardens trailed Lumsden by six points at halftime in the championship game but were outscored 20-1 in the third quarter in a 63-39 loss.

Grade 11 post Cassandra Furey-Cameron led the Ardens with 10 points in the loss.

Darlington-Keubler added seven points and grade 12 guard Shae-Lynn Bolton added seven points as well.

“Although we came up a little short in the final, overall I think it was great learning weekend for the girls,” said second-year head coach Andrew Herrick.

The Ardens’ 12-player roster is comprised of six rookies and six veterans. They have three grade 12’s, three grade 11’s, five grade 10’s, and one grade nine. Megan Jackson and Duane Regier join Herrick on the coaching staff.

“This year we have implemented new systems both offensively and defensively so as a coaching staff we understand that there are going to be growing pains to start the season,” explained Herrick. “We saw those in the third quarter of the final when at half we were down by six, but Lumsden made some adjustments and outscored us 20-1 in the third quarter which was the difference. There are definite areas that we will focus on this week in practice and hopefully that will show on the floor next weekend in Caronport.”

The Ardens were slowed by injuries during their season debut.

“Two new additions to the team this year, Kirstie Klevgaard and Victoria Rude, took advantage of extra minutes available due to injury and showed they can compete at the senior level. Both are going to be valuable players for us this season,” said Herrick. “Once we get everyone back and healthy we will have the opportunity to be very competitive in the 4A classification.”

The Ardens will be right back in tournament action this weekend in Caronport at the Cougar Classic before hosting their home tournament the following weekend.
