TRURO - Keeping things simple paid off Saturday for the Truro Bearcats.
In spite of finishing a run of three games in as many nights, the Bearcats (15-5-0-2) still managed to dominate the Bridgewater Lumberjacks (2-20-1-2) to the tune of a 7-1 victory in front of 411 fans at RECC.
"It was a good win," Bearcats forward Kyle Tibbo, who scored a pair of goals, said. "It was a good way to finish the weekend with a big win like that."
The second-place Bearcats are just three points behind the Pictou County Crushers (16-3-0-3) atop the EastLink Division. The Lumberjacks (2-20-1-2) are at the bottom of the six-team group.
The victory came on the heels of a 5-2 win Friday in Yarmouth against the third-place Mariners (14-6-0-0) after falling 5-4 Thursday to the Crushers.
On Saturday, Bearcats defenceman Ryan Moore opened the scoring at 11:29 of the opening frame and Tibbo made it 2-0 just 1:30 later.
Layton Parsons answered for the Lumberjacks at 14:15 to ruin Jacob Fancy's shutout bid. Fancy, however, claimed his 11th victory of the season with 23 saves.
Truro captain Phillip Fife gave his team a 3-1 cushion just over a minute later before Tibbo, Jordan McNaughton and leading Tyler Morrison, who leads the team with 29 points (12G, 17A) in 22 games, all notched second-period tallies to put the game out of reach.
Bearcats forward Brandon Bazinet struck at the mid-point of the third to round out the scoring.
Billy Clarke was tagged with the loss in a 26-save effort.
"I think we just did the little things and kept it simple," Tibbo, a 17-year-old Conception Bay South, Nfld., native, said. "We just didn't try to do too much."
Tibbo said he and his teammates were happy they were able to take advantage of the struggling Lumberjacks for a pair of precious points.
"That's a game we should win and its good to stay up there in the standings," he said.
The Bearcats have until Friday to recover from the stretch when they're scheduled to do battle with the Campbellton Tigers in Campbellton at 7:30 p.m. They then make a Saturday stop in Miramichi to meet the Timberwolves at 7:30 p.m.
