Swift Current rink knocked out in semi-finals by defending champions from Ontario

The Swift Current rink of lead Kelsey Dutton, second Carl deConnick Smith, third Kelly Wood and skip Shaun Meachem are competing in the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship hosted at Ottawa's Rideau Curling Club from Nov. 14 to 23.

An incredible run came to an end in the semi-finals for a Swift Current rink at the 2014 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship in Ottawa.

The Shaun Meachem rink, composed of Meachem, third Kelly Wood, second Carl deConinck Smith and lead Kelsey Dutton, lost 6-5 to Ontario’s Cory Heggestad in the semi-final Friday evening.

Saskatchewan was in control most of the way after scoring two in the fourth end to lead 3-1. Ontario took control of the game in the ninth end when they scored three points to take a 6-4 lead heading into the final end.

Meachem had a chance to force and an extra end when his angle-raise takeout attempt took out both Ontario counters but his shooter spun out of the house for the single point.

Meachem, curling out of the Swift Current curling club, had finished second in the 12-team round robin with a 9-2 record to earn a spot in the semi-final.

Ontario is facing Alberta in the championship match today.
