TRURO – The Cobequid Cougars kept a strong girls volleyball season rolling recently at the McDonald’s Invitational Tournament in Antigonish.
The Cobequid Cougars recently won their third consecutive McDonald’s Invitational title in Antigonish with a 2-0 (25-11, 25-15) sweep of the Riverview Royals in the final. It was the fourth tournament win in six events this season for the Cougars. The Cougars defeated the Riverview Royals 2-0 (25-11, 25-15) in the final to win their third consecutive McDonald’s Invitational crown and their fourth tournament title in six events this season.
The Cougars knocked off the Sir John A. Macdonald Flames 2-0 (25-15, 15-13) in the semifinal and the Ecole Acadienne de Truro 2-0 (25-13, 25-15) in their quarter-final match.
Cobequid went 4-0 in the round robin with straight sets wins over Memorial (25-14, 25-7), Northumberland (25-12, 25-6) and Sir John A. Macdonald (25-12, 25-11). The Cougars also defeated the Royals 2-1 (20-25, 25-21, 15-9).
Amira Faulkner paced the Cougars at the net with 28 kills and 27 blocks while Janine Marshall racked up 37 kills, 18 aces and 19 digs.
Cobequid libero Traveen Singh made 21 perfect passes and Stephanie Tompkins pocketed 22 aces.
Cobequid #2 as knocked out of the event in a 2-1 (25-14, 15-25, 5-15) quarter-final setback to the Royals. The Cougars were third in their pool with wins over Sydney Academy (25-12, 25-6), Ecole Acadienne de Truro (12-25, 25-17, 15-12) and losses to Dr. John Hugh Gillis (15-25, 10-25) and Parkview (16-25, 25-23, 8-15).
Both Cougars squads are back in action this weekend at the Saint Mary’s University High School Tournament which features the top 20 teams from across Nova Scotia and P.E.I.
