TRURO – Several Colchester County athletes will enter the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame Saturday as members of the 1981 Acadia Axemen football team.

Ron Meech, Rod Barton, Mike Cock, Dave Clark and Mike MacKay, who was the team manager, were all members of the famous team, which is one of just 13 teams in CIS history to post a perfect season after beating the University of Alberta 18-12 in the Canadian College Bowl, now known as the Vanier Cup.

Acadia pounded the Queen's Golden Gaels 40-14 to win the Atlantic Bowl and book their ticket to the national final with more than half its roster hailing from the Maritimes.

The induction ceremony will be held at the World Trade and Convention Centre in Halifax.

The Axemen join the 1985 Kentville Wildcats baseball team in the team category along with basketball star John Hatch and boxer Lawrence Hafey. Gymnastics guru Tak Kikuchi and snowboarding's Stephen Fairbairn will also be inducted in the builder category.

I grew up in Truro and was lucky enough to attend Acadia from 1979 to 1982 and actually attended the winning game in Toronto. It was a great game and a proud moment for us Acadia fans.
