Home to Hants East on Friday
WESTVILLE – The Northumberland Nighthawks scored two late power play goals to defeat the ARHS Vikings 4-3 in Northern Nova Scotia High School Hockey League action on Saturday in Westville.
With the Vikings leading 3-2, Jethro Gunn scored his third goal of the game on the power play to tie the score with three minutes to go before Dallas MacDonald’s shot trickled by Vikings’ goalie Evan MacKenzie with two minutes to go to five the Nighthawks a one-goal lead.
Amherst came close to tying the game and forcing overtime when with less than 10 second to go the puck bounced over the stick of a Vikings’ player all by himself at the side of the Northumberland net.
The Nighthawks had 1-0 and 2-1 leads on goals by Dunn while Jesse Gouchie and Brody Deegan each scored for Amherst before Joel St. Peters scored on the power play midway through the third period to give Amherst its first lead of the game.
Gouchie, Brandon Greeno and Alex VanSnick added assists.
MacKenzie was solid in goal for Amherst, turning aside more than 35 shots.
On Friday, the Dr. J.H. Gillis Royals scored four second period goals en route to a 6-3 win over the Vikings in Amherst.
Devin MacLaughlin had three goals for the Royals, while Oliver Ross MacDonald had a goal and an assist. Patrick MacIsaac and Seamus Brophy added single goals.
Brendan Stone scored twice for Amherst with Ryan Ackles also scoring. Justin Leach, Dylan Baker, Brad Black, Stephen Belyea and Greeno added assists.
Matt Hunter and MacKenzie both saw action, facing 34 shots between them.
Amherst returns to action on Friday when it hosts the Hants East Tigers at the Amherst Stadium. Game time is 8:15 p.m.
On Saturday, the Vikings travel to Lantz to face the Tigers.
