BROOKFIELD – The Cumberland County Blues won their first game of the 2013-2014 Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League campaign after beating the Elks 4-3 Tuesday night at the Don Henderson Memorial Complex in Brookfield.
The win comes after the Blues went scoreless in their first two games of the season.
Steven Whittle scored the Blues first goal of the season a little over five minutes into the first frame off passes from Jesse Colborne and Shane Harnish.
The Elks tied it up 1-1 a little over a minute later but the period ended with the Blues up 2-1 after Paul Gulliver scored with passes from Colborne and Whittle with 9:13 left in the first.
The Blues went up 3-1 five and a half minutes into the second period when Zack Black scored with an assist from Aaron Crocker, but Brookfield tied the game 3-3 before the period ended.
Crocker scored a little over two minutes into the third period, putting the Blues up 4-3, and neither team was able to score for the rest of the game.
Blues goaltender Jessie Cox faced 41 shots while his teammates fired 34 shots at Elks goaltender Spencer Scott.
The Blues return home Friday night where they will host the East Hants Penguins at 7:30 p.m. at the Richard Calder Arena.
The Blues lost their first game of the season to the Penguins 2-0 in East Hants.
