EAST HANTS – The Cumberland County Blues lost their first game of the 2013-2014 season by a score of 2-0 to the Penguins Friday night at the East Hants Sportsplex.

Blues coach Robert McLure said the Blues did not win the small battles for the puck and were out hit in the contest.

The Blues went 0-6 on the power play and Blues assistant coach Grove Sutton said the Blues had several scoring chances on the power play but they over-passed the puck and need to shoot more.

The Penguins went 0-3 on the power play.

Blues goaltender Jessie Cox stopped 40 or 42 shots, while his teammates had 24 shots on Penguins goaltender Jason Ellis.

The Penguins Cole MacDonell put the Penguins up 1-0 in the first period, and Brennan Hartling made it a 2-0 game in the third period on a shot that Cox tried to steer into the corner.

“Cox gave us the opportunity to win this game,” said Sutton.

The Blues home opener is Friday when they host the Valley Maple Leafs at 7:30 p.m.
