Amherst splits weekend action
The Truro Bearcats defeated the Amherst Ramblers 5-3 in Maritime Junior Hockey League action on Saturday.
The Amherst CIBC Wood Gundy Ramblers lost 5-3 to Truro in MHL action on Saturday in Truro.
TRURO – The Truro Bearcats scored three times in the third period, including an empty-net goal as time expired, to defeat the Amherst CIBC Wood Gundy Ramblers in Maritime Junior Hockey League action at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre in Truro on Saturday.
Daniel Perigo and Phillip Fife, with what proved to be the winner, scored in the third for Truro before Tyler Morrison scored at the 19:59 mark of the final period. Ryan Caswell scored midway through the period to tie the game at 3-3, a minute before Fife scored.
“I thought the effort was much better this weekend than it was last weekend. The compete level was much improved and we had a chance to win both games,” Ramblers coach Jim Bottomley said following the game. “The boys are battling and continuing to improve all the time. Now we just have to find some finishers to provide some offence.”
Colby Lanceleve for the Bearcats and rookie forward Zack MacEwan scored for Amherst in the first period before Brett Shute continued his hot hand scoring just 19 seconds into the second.
Jean-Marc Evans-Renaud scored five minutes into the period to sent the teams into the second intermission tied.
Nick Cass and Brock Morrison, with two, added assists for Amherst.
Truro outshot Amherst 29-24 with Richard Tingley putting in a solid effort between the pipes for the Ramblers.
Amherst returns to action next Saturday when the Ramblers host the defending league champion Summerside Western Capitals.
The Ramblers picked up their first win of the season on Friday in Yarmouth.
Shute had two goals and an assist in the 6-3 win with Serge Boisvert adding a pair of goal.
Caswell and Ross Martin, with his first as a Rambler, scored for Amherst before 1,322 fans at the Mariner Centre.
Kyle Campbell, Sean Fraser and Zack Henry scored for the Mariners.
