SPRINGHILL - The Cumberland County Blues begin their 2013-2014 Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League regular season campaign tonight in East Hants.

"We're pleased with how our camp is going but we're far from finalizing our roster," said Terry McManaman, Blues general manager. "We expect some movement from junior A and some late arrivals from Mount Allison University."

The Blues lost both their exhibition games to the Moncton Vito's last weekend. Sunday's loss came at the hands of many of their returning players, and McManaman is looking for better things from them tonight against the Penguins.

"We need a lot better effort from what we got Sunday in Moncton," said McManaman. "We have to change that right off the get-go in East Hants."

The season is just starting but McManaman says every point is important.

"If guys aren't prepared to work hard they won't be around long because there's a lot of guys who want to play."

McManaman said the Blues look strong on defence.

"We have a number of returning defencemen - Gil Murdock, Zack Anderon, Kevin Izerwood, Chris Poole, and Shane Harnish," said McManaman. "Shane is going to vocational school in Springhill. He was obtained him from Lower Sackville and he's been a really nice surprise at camp."

Up front they have a number of returning forwards.

"We need a big year out of Jesse Colborne," said McManaman.

Other returnee's up front in tonight's lineup will be Paul Gulliver, Aaron Crocker, Mike McLure, Zack Black, John Tattrie, and Brett Pendergast.

New players include Ryan Legere who played last year with the Junior C Truro Rangers, Ryan Durette from Moncton, Steve Whittle and Chris DeWinter.

"DeWinter was out with the Rambler camp and he's been a good surprise at our camp as well," said McManaman.

McManaman said that if they want to beat the Penguins tonight they're going to have to go hard.

"East Hants won it all two years ago and they have a good nucleus there."

The Blues home opener is next Friday when they will host the Valley Maple Leafs at 7:30 p.m.

"Our first home game is a tribute to teachers and junior and senior high school students in Cumberland County," said McManaman. "Teachers get in for $5 and the students can buy one ticket and get the second ticket for free."
