Ramblers rally comes up short

AMHERST – The Amherst CIBC Wood Gundy Ramblers almost rallied back from a 5-2 deficit but came up short Sunday at Amherst Stadium.

“We were a little sloppy in the first two periods but in the third we played hard and put some pucks in the net and got back in the game,” said Jim Bottomley, Ramblers coach and general manager.

The Miramichi Timberwolves scored with a little more than a minute left in the third period, winning the Maritime hockey league contest 6-5.

Bottomley told the players between periods that if they got the first goal in the third period they’d be right back in the game.

Brett Shute made it a 5-3 game 46 seconds into the third period off an assist from Cam McDonald. Shawn Wright made it 5-4 game a little over two minutes later off a pass from Damon MacEachern, and then Nick Cass tied the game 5-5 at 7:52 into the period with an assist from Serge Boisvert.

Jordan Kennedy got the game winner for the Timberwolves with 1:05 left in the game.

“We made a mistake and they capitalized on it,” said Bottomley.

Bottomley says his team needs to keep their goals-against down.

“We have to work on defensive zone coverage and we have to be moving our feet a little more and have to the get the puck to the net more,” he said.

The first period ended with the game tied 1-1.

Brock Morrison put the Ramblers up 1-0 with an assist from Kyle Beckwith at 7:08 into the game, but Kennedy tied the game 1-1 at 9:47 into the game.

Miramichi outscored the Ramblers 4-1 in the second period, with Ryan Caswell scoring the lone Rambler’s goal with an assist from Cass.

The Ramblers were issued six penalties in the second period and three in the third period. Miramichi received no penalites.

Ramblers goaltender Richard Tingley faced 32 shots and his teammates fired 41 shots at Miramichi goaltender Alex Collette.

Attendance at the game was 410.

Like I stated earlier, the Ramblers have to stay out of the penalty box to have any hope of winning in this league, all other teams have vastly improved over the past year.
