AMHERST – It wasn’t pretty, but the Amherst CIBC Wood Gundy Ramblers have picked up their first win of the preseason.

Brett Shute had two goals, including the tying marker late in the second period, to lead the Ramblers to a 3-1 win over the Dieppe Commandos in Maritime Junior Hockey League action on Saturday.

The two teams play Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the Arthur J. LeBlanc Arena.

“It was a sloppy game early on, but we started to get it together as the game went on,” Ramblers coach Jim Bottomley said. “Chase (Marchand) had a good game and kept us in it until we got going. I saw some good stuff, but I saw some stuff we have to work on.”

Colton Parsons opened the scoring for the Commandos 12:42 into the opening frame.

The Ramblers came close to tying it on several occasions, but Commandos goalies Connor Wilkinson and Vincent Charest made several stops late in the first period and through the second before Shute scored to tie it when he picked up a loose puck in front and buried it behind Charest with just under two minutes to go in the middle period.

Ryan Caswell and John Deacon added assists.

The Ramblers took the lead early in the second when Shute scored his second of the night with Brock Morrison adding an assist.

Caswell added an insurance goal midway through the final period when broke in the left side and wired a high shot over Charest with Ben MacDonald and Willie MacDonald adding assists.

“We’re not too far off but we need some help at forward,” Bottomley said. “We’ve been calling across the country looking for some help. Right now I’m waiting to see what’s happening at major junior. After Monday we should get some movement.”

Marchand made several big saves late in the game and got the help from the goalpost with just under a minute to go.

Shots on goal were 35 each.

Jamie Bishop did not dress and Blake Millman sat out the game with asuspension, while Nick Skerlick and 16-year-old defenceman Duncan McKie, who was in the Charlottetown Islanders camp, dressed.
