Humber Park meets Cornwall in consolation

A team of volunteers works to make the Ernie Landry Memorial Ball Park playable during the 49th David Maltby Memorial Little League Tournament on Sunday. The consolation and championship games are set for Monday.

AMHERST – Heavy rain early Sunday didn't deter teams competing at the 49th Annual David Maltby Memorial Little League tournament.

Rain forced a three-hour delay in the morning's action, but games resumed after noon with Lower Sackville and the New Glasgow DQ Biizzards advancing to Monday's championship game.

Lower Sackville defeated the Cornwall Cougars from P.E.I. in one semifinal Sunday night, while New Glasgow edged Humber Park in the other semi.

Humber Park plays Cornwall in the consolation final at 10 a.m. Monday while Lower Sackville faces New Glasgow in the final at 11 a.m.

The Amherst Canadian Tire Little League All-Stars went 1-2 in the tournament, dropping a 4-2 decision to Humber Park in their final game on Sunday. They opened with a big win over Sydney before losing a close 3-1 decision to New Glasgow later Saturday.

Just wanted to commend all of the people involved with this tournament. This was the first time we (PEI) had attended this tournament and I must say I have never been more impressed with the commitment of a group of volunteers. The efforts to restore the fields (twice), the announcers, canteen staff and the unpaid umpires, were above anything I had ever witnessed before. Amherst should be very proud of these people.
