AMHERST – Josh Landine of Kingswood Golf Course in Frederiction held on to win the Amherst Open on Thursday at the Amherst Golf Club.

Landine led after the first day, shooting a 67, and shot a 77 on the second day.

Amherst’s Matt Cormier shot a 72 on Wednesday and Thursday to force a playoff.

“It (the playoff) was a little tense but I had my friend step up and caddy for me, so that helped,” said Landine after the game. “And Matt is a great guy, so that made it a little easier.”

The playoff was a sudden death format.

Both Landine and Cormier bogeyed the first playoff hole, which was the No. 1.

They then moved on to No. 8, where Landine birdied the Par 4 for the win.

“He shot one to within three feet and putted for the win,” said Frank McShane, Amherst Golf Club pro.

Landine said the wind gave him trouble on the second day.

“I had to stay focused and not let bogeys bother me,” he said. “I kept pushing along trying to get up and down and survive.

“I didn’t know where I stood for most of the day.”

It was the first time Landine had been to the Amherst Golf Club.

“The greens were great. It was easy to get your ball in line and get it to go in.”

Landine also said the hospitality was great.

“Everybody’s been really friendly,” he said.

McShane said it was the biggest field they had in five or six years at the Amherst Open.

“We had 23 pros, which is better than we normally have,” said McShane. “We had a couple of plus handicaps and two or three zero handicaps.”

McShane thanked the sponsors and the volunteers.

“We wouldn’t be able to host this tournament without them,” he said.
