AMHERST – The premiere event at the Amherst Golf is set to return.

Approximately 140 professional and amateur golfers will hit the fairways at the Amherst Golf Club next week for the Archway Insurance-Tantramar Chevrolet Buick GMC Amherst Open with the pros chasing a purse of up to $5,000 while there are a number of other prizes available for the top amateur finishers.

“It’s shaping up to be another very competitive field,” Amherst club pro Frank McShane said. “We’re expecting up to 140 golfers in total with a strong contingent of professionals from across the region coming to Amherst for several days.”

Events actually kick off on Tuesday night with the Carter’s Sports Cresting Shootout that will see 30 pro and amateur golfers hit the course for cash and prizes.

By the sixth tee there will only be six remaining with two eliminated on that hole and one each on the remaining three holes until a champion is declared.

Last year, Matt Cormier of Amherst won the top prize.

The Open itself begins early Wednesday and continues through Thursday. McShane said the tournament attracts some of the top golfers from across the region because many of the competitors enjoy the Amherst course.

“The course is very popular among those who come to the Open. It’s a fun course to play that has its challenges with the wind and the pin placements,” McShane said. “This year we have a group of four golfers coming from Ontario while there is another group coming from Kingswood in Fredericton. We will also have a lot of club members competing including a number of guys who are always in the running for the club championship.”

Matt Cormier, who won the 2013 championship recently, is competing along with Mitchell Roy, Mark Gould, Justin Matthews and Travis Davis.

Among the pros coming to the Open are Brian Affleck and Dave Williamson from Pictou County, Tim McCullum from Fredericton, Craig Dale of Truro, Duane MacGregor of P.E.I. and Elliott Isenor, Mike Clarke and Amherst native Jamie MacKay from the Fox Harb’r resort.

Also competing is Kim Adams-Tattrie of Fox Harb’r. She has competed in two U.S. Women’s Opens.

McShane will be joined Amherst’s other pros, Travis Parrell and Michael Archibald (who won the tournament in 2011) will also be competing.

It’s not known if last year’s pro champ, Kevin Dugas of Moncton, is competing.
