SPRINGHILL – The Springhill Mosquito A Fencebusters are heading to the Baseball Nova Scotia provincial championships.

They punched their ticket to the tournament after beating the Truro Bearcats 12-4 in the provincial qualifier championship game Sunday in Springhill.

Jacob Melanson was the starter in the game and Alaina Porter was the closer.

“It felt good to get the last out,” said Porter after the game.

Her dad, and coach, Carl Porter, was proud of the team’s effort after the win.

“All the pitchers performed well during the (three-day) tournament,” said Porter. “It was a total team effort.”

Jacob’s grandfather, Jim Melanson, also coach’s the team.

“We have a good defensive team and the players can play all different positions,” said Melanson. “We actually have 10 pitchers out of 12 players who can pitch for us.”

The team will now prepare for the provincials at the end of the month in Clark’s Harbour.

“We’ll be doing a lot of fundraising from now until then,” said Melanson.

Fundraisers include a turkey burger sale, packing bags at Foodland in Springhill, and maybe having a bottle drive. Others fundraisers will be announced.

“We’re also taking donations,” said Melanson.

Melanson thanked everybody who helped make the tournament a success, and gave special thanks to Amie Stewart, chairman of the event.

Melanson has been coaching ball for more than 30 years and said he couldn’t have done it any better himself, especially with new rule changes regarding the pitch counts.

“She did a superb job and was deeply appreciated by all the players, parents, coaches and myself,” said Melanson.

He also thanked Sarah Carde for all the work she did, including working at the canteen.

He also grateful for the support and hard work from parents and coaches.

“They played a major role in making the tournament a success.”

Asked what has kept him involved in baseball for so many years, Melanson said, “the players and the love of the game.”
