: IMP/Reds tied 2-2; Jager Bombs lead Sobeys 3-1

IMP outfielder Cody Hunter, seen here in this July 2012 photo at Lions Park in Springhill, gets ready to hit the ball. Hunter preserved IMP's 8-7 game four win on Tuesday by robbing Reds' player Shane O'Byrne of a two-run home run in the top of the 7th inning. IMP and the Reds are tied 2-2 while the Jager Bombs lead Sobeys 3-1

AMHERST-Momentum has been a difficult thing to maintain during the Amherst Men's Slopitch Finals so far-unless you're named the Jager Bombs.

The Jager Bombs, who went 1-3 against Sobeys during the regular season, find themselves one win away from winning the Division II Slopitch title.

Sobeys won the opening game last Thursday, August 1 on Robb's 2. Undaunted, thge Jager Bombs won game 2, as well as games 3 and 4, on Tuesday night. Sobeys needs to win both games Thursday to force game 7.

In Division I play, the Cumberland Reds and IMP have exchanged wins like two heavyweight boxers exchange punches in 12 round fight. The Reds won the first game of the series on August 1 by a score of 16-2. Undaunted, IMP won game 2 by a score of 5 to 4. This past Tuesday, the Reds won game 3 by a score of 7-1 while IMP held on to win game 4 by a score of 8 to 7 on the strength of clutch home runs by Brian Hebert and Ronnie Ross, notwithstanding a game-saving catch by Cody Hunter, who reached over the fence to rob Reds' player Shane O'Byrne of a two-run home run.

"(That catch) was probably the softball highlight of my life," stated Cody Hunter, a native of Springhill, following last night's game.

"(Beating the Reds) would be a huge upset," stated Hunter. "We have to play good ball and jump on the bat quick," he added.

Hunter, who has played in the Amherst Men's Slopitch League for the past six years, notwithstanding such prolific co-ed as Tons of Fun (he now plays for Way More Fun), was on the last team that beat the Cumberland Reds in the playoffs.

Hunter's teammates included Rob Henderson, Davie Hyatt, Matt Smith and Bliss Walton.

The Reds and IMP will play a doubleheader Thursday night starting at 6:30 pm on Robb's 1. Game 7, if necessary, will go Monday, August 12 at 6:30.

As for the Jager Bombs and Sobeys, game 5 will go Thursday night on Robb's 2 at 6:30 pm. Game 6, if necessary, will also be played. Should Sobeys complete the comeback, game 7 would also be played on Monday.

In other slopitch news, the annual Bates-Merrill Slopitch tournament is scheduled to be played August 9-11 at Robb's Centennial Complex.

In addition, according to Luke Crocker, on Tuesday August 13 at 6:30 pm on Robb's 1, there will be an ARHS Vikings Alumni slopitch game.

There is no cost to play, but everyone is asked to bring a non-perishable food item for the food bank. Two games will be played: one with wooden bats, and another with no homerun rule. Rainout date is August 14.
