AMHERST – A leaping, game-winning catch at the centre field fence by IMP’s Cody Hunter put an end to the Cumberland Reds final inning rally and gave IMP a 2-2 tie in their best-of-seven, Division 1, men’s slopitch championship series against the Reds Tuesday night at Robb’s complex.

With IMP up 8-7 and the tying run on first, the Reds Shane O’Byrne knocked a rocket to the centre field fence, a rocket that would have given the Reds the win if not for the catch by Hunter.

The play came immediately after the Reds scored two runs after a controversial call at first base.

IMP said a Reds runner that was on first was hit by a batted ball as he was leaving first and the play should have been called back.

The base runner made it to third base and the umpire said the runner wasn’t hit and, despite IMP’s protests, the play stood as is. The runner remained at third and was batted in for a run.

Just as it looked like the call would determine the outcome of the game, Hunter made the catch, ended the game and made any protests pointless.

Brian Hebert hit a home run and a double for IMP, and Ronnie Ross hit a home run. Chris Peck and Chris McIsaac hit a double and a single, and Corey Mattinson hit three singles.

Corey Nicholson and Jason Hoeg hit a double and a single for the Reds.

The Reds won the first game of the double header 7-1. Marc Belliveau hit two doubles and a single in the win, and Malcolm Estabrooks added a triple.

Dave Burke and Jeremy Edwards both hit a double for IMP.

Jager Bombs vs. Sobeys

The Jager Bombs took a 3-1 series lead in the best-of-seven Division 2 series after beating Sobeys by scores of 22-7 and 25-10.

Dave Chapman hit a home run and a single for the Jagers in their 22-7 win, and Rory Faulkner hit a home run and a single and two singles for Sobeys.

Chapman hit two more home runs in Jagers 25-10 win, while Matt Fowler hit two home runs for Sobeys.

Game’s 5 and 6 are Thursday at Robb’s. Game 7, if necessary, will be played on Tuesday.
