Wins Amherst Golf Club's men's championship

AMHERST – Matt Cormier is tough to beat when he's playing at his best.

Cormier followed an opening round 73 with a 70 on Sunday to win the red jacket as the Amherst Golf Club's men's club champion.

"It feels great. I had an awesome two rounds and my playing partners were great to play with ," said Cormier, who had a two-day total of 143 – six stroke back at 149. "I had my good friend on the bag and he helped me quite a bit."

Despite challenging conditions on the course on Saturday, Cormier set the pace early on with a 73. Justin Matthews was just a stroke back going into the final day and despite putting in a solid 75 in the final round he couldn't keep pace with Cormier.

"When he's playing good he's not beatable," Matthews said. "I really enjoyed being partnered up with him, I learned quite a bit about how he approached the game and each shot."

Cormier said having so many players in the hunt kept hiim focused on Sunday.

"I couldn't really play match play against my group, I knew I had to score well to win," Cormier said. "It helped me stay focused."

Cormier said he played consistent golf and was able to adjust to the wind.

"The course setup was the same both days, but the wind was gusting and changing directions. It was hard to judge the win. Today, it settled down and was much more manageable."
