SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. – The Amherst Pioneer Fuels Red Sox struck for five runs in the first and four in the second en route to an 11-0 win over the Enfield Wildcats to claim the gold medal at the Summerside and Area Minor Baseball Bantam AA Tournament on Sunday.
Chris Richards threw a complete game two-hitter for the Red Sox while striking out eight and walking none.
Brad Gray, Caleb Coulson and Baiden Landry each hit two singles for Amherst, while Mike O’Brien and MacKenzie LeBlanc each doubled. Richards and Blake Thompson each singled.
Amherst earned a spot in the final with a 10-2 win over the Stellarton Albions earlier Sunday.
Brandon Greeno struck out 18 Stellarton batters and gave up five hits. He walked one before being relieved by Caleb Coulson in the seventh.
Greeno homered and singled for the Red Sox while Gray hit two singles and tripled, Coulson and Morgan Jobes each singled twice, Richards doubled and Dylan Baker and Spencer Moreau each singled.
The Red Sox opened the tournament on Friday with a 17-2 win over the Summerside 1 Chevy’s.
Jobes homered, doubled and singled and Coulson homered, while Moreau and Gray each hit two singles. Richards hit two doubles and singled and Greeno singled.
Greeno and Moreau pitched for Amherst. They struck out eight, gave up three hits and walked three.
In their second game, the Red Sox came from behind to defeat Stellarton 7-4 with O’Brien hitting a home run and adding a single and Coulson adding a home run. Thompson hit a single as the Red Sox scored two in the fifth and four in the sixth.
Richards, O’Brien, LeBlanc and Coulson pitched for Amherst, giving up three hits and striking out 12. They walked three.
In their final round robin game, Amherst defeated Summerside 1 by a 12-0 count.
Gray homered for Amherst while Jobes, O’Brien and Landry each doubled and LeBlanc, Richards and Moreau each singled.
