‘I am excited and thrilled’: Nathan MacKinnon signs entry-level deal with Colorado Avalanche

COLORADO - Halifax Mooseheads’ Nathan MacKinnon signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Colorado Avalanche, the team announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but according to capgeek.com, the contract, including bonuses, is valued at $11.325 million over three years.

The 17-year-old Cole Harbour native was the Avalanche’s No.1 pick at the NHL draft on June 30.

Joe Sakic, the Avalanche’s executive vice president of hockey operations, expressed his excitement over the signing in a team release.

“We are happy to have Nathan under contract and anxious to see him at training camp,” he said. “His presence will bring additional speed and talent to our team, as well as a lot of excitement to our fans.”

In the same release, MacKinnon said he was thrilled about taking the next step in his hockey career.

“The signing of this first NHL contract represents for me another step towards becoming a professional hockey player,” MacKinnon said. “I am excited and thrilled to have been drafted by the Avalanche, and I am already working very hard in order to be ready physically and mentally for training camp.”

MacKinnon arrived at the team’s development camp in Denver on Monday.

MacKinnon is coming off a championship season where he led the Mooseheads to their first-ever Quebec Major Junior Hockey League title and first-ever Memorial Cup championship. He was named MVP of the 2013 Memorial Cup after recording a tournament-high 13 points in only four games.

NHL salary: $925,000 (maximum allowed under league rules)

Performance bonuses: $2.85 million

Signing bonuses: $92,500

Cap hit: $3,775,000.
