In Victory Lane

Amherst’s Ryan Mackintosh won the first race of the 20th Summer Shootout at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Monday.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The 2013 Charlotte Motor Speedway Summer Shootout started the same way as the 2012 edition ended for driver Ryan Mackintosh, in victory lane.

The 20th annual showcase for the best of the best Legend Car drivers in the United States opened up Monday on the Charlotte Motor Speedway short track in front of a crowd of 4000.

Rain plagued the Charlotte area late in the afternoon with severe weather warnings, including tornado warnings, but that did not stop the 17-year-old Canadian racing sensation from putting the first race into the books with a win.

In a post race interview from the tech inspection garage Mackintosh commented, "I can't believe we were able to pull off that win. The car was just not good."  Mackintosh continued, "I guess that is what's great about the Shootout, you don't know until you see the flag."

Mackintosh qualified fourth out of 27 cars but was not happy with the handling of the Number 03 car.  The BAM Foyt development driver and the Chris Woods Racing team went to work before the start of the race to make some improvements.

"We will work tonight to get the car better for tomorrow," stated team co-owner and crew chief Chris "Woody" Woods.

Starting on the outside of the second row, Mackintosh was able to take advantage of the miscues by the leaders at the green flag. Pole sitter Billy Webb, locked his brakes in turn one and Mackintosh was able to move from fourth to second coming out of turn 2.

New race leader Joe Ryan Osborne also locked up his brakes in turn 3 while under pressure from Mackintosh and the Amherst teenager was able to complete another pass on the outside to take the race lead at the stripe.

The following 22 laps saw three restarts including a green-white-checker finish. Mackintosh was able to hold of a steady threat from the Number 20 of Riley Halverson throughout the closing stages to capture the win.

"That's just one of ten and there is a lot of work to do over the next two months", stated an excited Mackintosh.

The Jack In The Box Summer Shootout is an eight-week, 10-race series held at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The series is televised on Fox Sports South.
