Vikings Player Joey O’Dell knocks a high ball out of the park during their second game against the Charles P. Allen High School Cheetahs yesterday at Robb’s Centennial Complex in Amherst.
AMHERST – The Amherst Regional High School Vikings Slopitch team is off to the provincial championships.
They punched their ticket to the tournament after defeating the Charles P. Allen High School Cheetahs by scores of 18-17 and 14-5 Tuesday at Robb’s Centennial Complex in Amherst.
“Offensively we played well but were a little rough defensively in the first game,” said Darren Collins, Vikings coach. “But we settled down in the second game.”
The Vikings edged the Cheetahs 18-17 in first game.
Joey O’Dell hit two home runs in the 18-17 win, while Peter Kane hit a home run, a double and three singles. Josh Lee hit a home run a double and a single, while Drew Skinner hit a home run and a double.
O’Dell hit another home run in the second game and Drew Skinner added homer and a triple, while Matt Hunter hit a home run and a double.
The best-of-three play-in was a qualifier for the provincial championships this weekend in Musquodoboit Harbour.
“We’ll have to be more urgent with our defence,” said co-coach Charlie Chambers. “Our progress has been good but we have to be more consistent.
The Viking finished third at last year provincials, and with many returning players Chambers hopes to do better this year.
“We finished third last year and we’d like to finish two spots higher than that this year,” he said.
