Springhill's Ryan Lockhart is racing

David Strang was testing out his bike yesterday in Springhill. The racer said all the other competitors in the 250 pro-class are hoping to beat Springhill's Ryan Lockhart. Stang's dad, Richard Strang, spent the last week building the track. Sixty truckloads of dirt were trucked into the arena to build the track.

SPRINGHILL - Motocross racers have their hands on their throttles and will be gunning for Ryan Lockhart Friday and Saturday, during the 6th annual Josh Damery Memorial Arenacross at the Dr. Carson & Marion Murray Community Centre in Springhill.

"Hopefully we'll be able to beat him," said pro-class racer David Strang. "That's everyone's goal I think. Beat the hometown hero."

Lockhart is from Springhill and is the 2009 Canadian Arenacross Champion.

When told of the goal of the other racers Lockhart said, "Bring it on. I'm ready to go."

Lockhart won last year's motocross in Springhill.

"Last year I hadn't been riding a whole lot and I was pretty out f shape. I'm much more prepared for it this year, so I expect to win," said Lockhart. "But it's all in fun. As long as we put on a good show for the crowd, that's all we can ask for."

Lockhart flew in from Vancouver on Thursday and got his first look at the track.

"They did a great job with the track," said Lockhart. "The dirt is much better this year. Last year it was really wet and it was hard to work with.

"This year is a lot better so it should make for some great racing."

Lockhart works in Vancouver for a company, Atlas Neck Brace, that designs neck braces for motocross racers.

He's been in and out of the race game the last few years.

"Just when I think I don't want to do it anymore I always find a reason to come back," he said.

He said he loves to race in front of the hometown crowd.

"It's always fun to come back and race here," he said. "It's not often I get to do that, so it's something I don't want to miss."

Arenacross was introduced to Springhill last year.

"Last year was overwhelming with the support from the town and all the spectators on both nights," said Lockhart. "Hopefully we can up the excitement this year and just go from there.

"We want to continue it for years to come," he added. "It brings money to the town and I feel it's valuable addition to the town."

Strang is looking forward to racing against Lockhart.

"The more intense the competition the better," said Strang. "It pushes you to keep up with the best.

"It's all good fun. It's a good way to start the season, added Strang. "Hopefully we have even better crowds this year. It will keep us coming back."

Doors open Friday and Saturday at 10 a.m.

Racers practice in the morning, qualify during the afternoon, and the main events begin at 7 p.m.
