AMHERST – The Grade 6 Amherst Selects are the 2013 Division 4 Mini-Girls Basketball Nova Scotia Provincial silver medalists, after losing 34-32 to Bedford Academy Sunday at Spring Street Academy.
“I know we wanted a banner but to finish second in Division 2 Mini-basketball is a great accomplishment in itself,” said coach Patti Bennett.
The two teams spent much of the game only two points within range of each other.
The game came down to the wire with Amherst having possession of the ball in the last seven seconds of the game, but they were unable to capitalize before the buzzer sounded.
“It was exciting,” said Bennett. “I can be proud of 11 girls that gave it their all, but sometimes with basketball it’s just the way the ball bounces.”
Ceilidh Bennett and Darcy Gould scored six points each for the Selects, while Jordan Janes, Kayla Hatfield, Adrianna O’Quinn and Victoria Webb scored four points each. Deanna Brown and Rachel Robitza had two points each.
The girls started the season in Division 3 but were bumped up to Division 2.
“These girls started to play together in January and they had never played together before that,” said Bennett. “To be together for three months and to finish with a silver in Division 2 is an accomplishment in itself.”
Bennett thanked her co-coach Peter Nixon.
“He’s Mr. Fix-It,” said Bennett. “Along with the coaching, he looks after all the injuries. I didn’t know what I’d do without him.”
She also thanked all the volunteers and spectators who came out and made the provincial tournament a success.
“There were good crowds that stopped by to watch,” she said. “Just to have the town support was amazing.”
