Grade-6 girls finish second in nail-biter.

AMHERST - The Grade 5 Amherst Selects are the 2013 Division 4 Mini-Girls Provincial Champions, after a convincing 51-27 win over Acadia Sunday at Spring Street Academy.

Lauren Furlong led the Selects in the win with 20 points, followed by Olivia Scott with 15, Ashley Ripley with eight, Keira Dyck with six points, and Doneka Sharpe with two points.

The Grade 5 girls started out the season in Division 5 of the Basketball Nova Scotia League but were bumped up to Division 4.

"Kids, parents, volunteers and coaches showed a lot of commitment all year long," said the Division 4 selects coach Mike LeBlanc.

The Grade-6 girls, who play in Division 2, finished with a silver medal after losing 34-32 to Bedford Academy Sunday at Spring Street Academy.

The game came down to the wire with Amherst having possession of the ball in the last seven seconds of the game, but was unable to sink the ball into the basket.

"It's all about skills development and to finish one-two the province is excellent," said LeBlanc. "And the tournament was great for the town as well."
