TRURO - The Amherst CIBC Wood Gundy Ramblers have taken Game 1 of their best-of-seven Eastlink Division final series after beating the Bearcats 3-2 Tuesday night in Truro.
Ben Berisha led the way for the Ramblers in the first period by scoring two goals, giving his team a 2-0 lead at the end of the frame.
Patrick Harrison assisted on both goals, with Brett Shute also helping out on the first goal. The two goals were scored at the 8:16 mark and at the 18:37 mark in the first period.
"We had to win one in Truro, so it feels great to get the win," said Jim Bottomley, Ramblers coach and general manager after the game.
Bottomley said his team executed the game plan well.
"And we had some good goaltending out of (Richard) Tingley when we needed it, and we worked hard," said Bottomley. "The two goals they got were a couple break mistakes in our defence but those things are going to happen, but we kept plugging away and didn't get down."
There were only three penalties in the first period - two to the Ramblers and one to the Bearcats.
Grant West cut the Ramblers lead in half in the second period with help from Mitchell Robillard. That was the only goal in the second frame and the period ended with the Ramblers up 2-1.
Amherst was assessed the only penalty in the second - too many men on the ice.
In the third period it was Danny Harquail putting the Ramblers up 3-1 at 2:06 into the period. Robert Davis assisted on the goal.
Brandon Pye made it 3-2 game a little over three minutes later but the Ramblers were able to hold the Bearcats off for the last 15 minutes of the game.
Shots on goal were 34-26 in favour of the Bearcats.
Bottomley said his team feels good to have got the win but aren't ‘overly ecstatic.'
"It's a seven game series. That's one game we had to get, now we'll head home and stay focused," he said. "We don't want to be looking past the next game. It's a long series yet."
