Aerials Gymnastics Club recreational gymnast, Lily Gilbert, receives a medal from competitive gymnast Kyrsten Landry Sunday afternoon at ARHS.

AMHERST – After two days of flips, twists and cartwheels, the 2013 March Break Invitational is in the books.

“I think the meet is getting better every year and I think it is, in some ways, getting easier to host every year,” said Aerials coach Michelle Landry. “It’s never easy but every year it’s more like clockwork.”

About 200 gymnasts participated in the two-day invitational at Amherst Regional High School and Landry is pleased with her team’s performance.

“In the Novice 1 and Tyro 1 categories we had one of the judges call us over and she was talking about how our gymnasts stood out on the beam, and how great they looked and how much effort they put in, so that was nice to hear.”

Megan Cole finished first overall in the Novice 1 category, and the clubs two Open 3 athletes, sisters Felicia and Kyrsten Landry, finished first and second on the beam respectively. Also scoring first was Nicole Baily on the bars in Novice 1, and Darcy Fullerton on floor in Open 1.

Next up for the gymnasts is the three-day provincial championships hosted by the Aerials club at ARHS from April 5-7. About 250 gymnasts will participate in the provincials.

“We kind of used this as a practice run for the provincials and thought about how we could change and improve things for the provincials,” said Landry. “This invitational was definitely a good dry run.”
