AMHERST - In what will be another first for Vikings hockey, they will play for a regional banner when the Nova Scotia Schools Athletic Federation regional championship kicks off Friday at 8:15 p.m. at Amherst Stadium.
Vikings coach Wayne Mackenzie said the team is coming off a high after recently traveling to Moncton and beating the Bernice MacNaughton High School Highlanders 11-4, but are taking nothing for granted going into the regionals.
"We haven't played a lot of games in the last two weeks but we've been working hard in practice, especially on special teams," said MacKenzie. "The boys are buying into the system."
The Vikings will face off against the Northumberland Nighthawks, who they beat Northumberland 4-2 the last time the two teams met.
Whoever wins the best-of-three series wins the regional banner.
Game two is Saturday at 6 p.m. in Trenton.
Game three, if necessary, will be played next Friday at Amherst Stadium.
