Ramblers shorthanded defensively
The Amherst CIBC Wood Gundy Ramblers lost 3-2 in overtime to the Yarmouth Mariners on Friday night at the Mariner Centre.
YARMOUTH – A couple of bad bounces was all that stood between the Amherst CIBC Wood Gundy Ramblers stealing another win in Yarmouth.
The Mariners scored on a deflection with time winding down in the third period to send the game to overtime and then scored with a minute left in the extra period to defeat the Ramblers 2-1 in Maritime Junior Hockey League action on Friday.
"The boys played hard. We got caught in some penalty trouble and did a good job killing them off. They boys responded pretty good," Ramblers' coach Jim Bottomley said. "It shows the heart these guys have, the battled hard."
Brandon Bussey's second goal of the game was the winner and he skated out from behind the net and put a rebound from Jared Hicks behind Richard Tingley, who was outstanding in goal for the Ramblers stopping a pair of breakaways and robbing Bussey from point blank rank with the score tied 1-1 in the third.
Bussey opened scoring 4:17 into the first period when he one-timed a pass from Kyle Campbell, while Danny Harquail converted on a pass from Brock Morrison 7:37 into the second to tie the score with Tingley adding an assist.
Jacob Conrad appeared to score the winning goal when he was left untouched in front of Travis Wilkins with just over two minutes to go, but Hicks scored on a deflection with the Mariners' goalie on the bench for an extra attacker to force overtime.
Yarmouth outshot Amherst 43-28.
The Ramblers played without Jamie Bishop, who was suspended after receiving a gross misconduct on Wednesday, while Max Richard did not play after suffering an upper body injury on a check from behind against Truro. Ben MacDonald is still suffering the after effects of a concussion.
Cam McDonald was ejected in the second period for arguing with the referee.
Amherst returns to action tonight at 7 p.m. when the club hosts the Bridgewater Lumberjacks. Bridgewater lost 11-1 in Dieppe on Friday night.
