AMHERST – The Amherst Regional High School Junior Varsity Vikettes basketball team is hosting a six-team tournament this weekend at ARHS.
The team has a new coaching staff guiding the girls from the bench.
April Scott is the head coach, and Sarah Carter and Charlie Chambers are the assistant coach’s.
This is Chambers’ first new coaching assignment after having a successful 15-year run with the Springhill High School Golden Eagles girl’s basketball team.
Chambers is a teacher at ARHS, and last week he was on the bench in the ARHS gymnasium helping coach his new team against his old SHS team. He said it felt ‘very weird.’
“I was cheering for both teams,” said Chambers with a laugh. “It was a very different experience.”
The new SHS girl’s basketball coach is Darrell McLellan, a math teacher at SHS.
“Over the years I said if a teacher came in and wanted to coach that I would gladly step back,” said Chambers. “I love coaching, I really enjoy it, and things have gone well over the years. The Springhill program has been very successful and it looks like it will continue to be successful.”
Chambers said he ‘adored’ the kids in Springhill but added that the ARHS girls are a good group of kids.
“They work hard and there’s lots of potential.”
Chambers said he will miss coaching in Springhill, and added, “Springhill has been very good to me and I thank them for all their support.”
