TRENTON - Lindsay Cheek's goal into an empty net with 29 seconds left in the game sealed a 5-3 victory for her hometown Pictou County Subway Selects over the visiting Cumberland County Community Credit Union Ramblers in Nova Scotia North Conference Female Midget Hockey League action here Sunday.
After a scoreless opening period, the Ramblers staked themselves to a 2-0 lead on goals by Adele Mansour and Elyse Ferguson and things looked good until the last minute of the frame when the Selects knotted the game at two with a pair of goals in the final 27 seconds of the period.
The Ramblers regained the lead just under four minutes into the third but the Selects tied it eight minutes in and then took the lead with just four minutes to play.
The Ramblers stormed the opponents' end of the rink in the dying minutes, but failed to capitalize before a turnover along the blueline allowed the Selects to ice the victory.
Sydney Skinner fired the other Ramblers goal, while Alex Hicks and Ferguson added single assists for the Credit Union squad, with Jennie Underwood taking the loss in goal.
For the Ramblers, it was a much better performance than the afternoon before where they were beaten 4-1 in Oxford in an exhibition contest.
The Ramblers had fallen behind 4-0 in a lackluster performance and had managed to find the twines once before the middle period ended after Whitney Milner's high wrist shot from the right wing circle found its way past the Selects goalie.
The Ramblers put in a much more spirited final period but could not close the gap on the Pictou squad. Miranda March took the loss in the Ramblers goal despite possibly her best performance of the season.
The Ramblers will take part in the annual Bluenose Tournament this coming weekend against the Parrsboro Predators and Sussex Rangers.
